Director Biography
Amr Gamal is a filmmaker and theater director from Aden, Yemen, whose work has played a key role in reviving Yemen’s cultural scene. As the co-founder of the Khaleej Aden Theater Troupe in 2005, Gamal helped bring live performances back to Yemen after a decade-long absence following the 1994 civil war. His debut feature, 10 Days Before the Wedding (2018), was the first Yemeni film to be screened commercially in theaters in 40 years, achieving unexpected success at the box office and drawing attention to the country’s emerging cinema.
In 2023, Gamal’s second feature, The Burdened, became the first Yemeni film to be selected for the Berlinale, winning the prestigious Amnesty Award for its powerful portrayal of social issues. With international recognition, including the Golden Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival, Gamal continues to shape the narrative of Yemen’s evolving social and cultural identity through both film and theater.
